Kristin's ISPO in terms of Thesis and the Big Finish!!!

3 short term objectives
1. Photography effective pic of work produced thus far.

2. Create one new piece of work on paper-new since I have been working on transparent surfaces!

3. Follow through on scheduled studio time

3 steps for each goal

1. a. pick a date for photographs, b. don't get sidetracked with other things--shoot the pics, c. meet the deadline

2. a. bring paper to school (it's in the garage in a box), b. put paper on the wall (the hardest step for me is actually taking the first step) , c. gather images and make screens!!!

3. a. make a hard copy of schedule, b. post it in my studio, c. don't belittle hours of time that are spent on research--count them for they are important!!

Research for my Goals
1. actually open the books I have check out and note important information instead of them collecting dust waiting for me to use them.

2. Find out about new direction of work and how that affects the path to where I am and information to include in Thesis.\

3. Find one current artist for the work I am doing now.

3 long term studio objectives

1. 3 new pieces on paper (my plan is to use really big paper!)

2. include new iconography

3. make a list of personal iconography and it's meaning to me

steps to achieve said goals

1. order more paper, cut paper, plan works

2. research images, photograph images, make transparencies or vellum copies

3. begin with a list of icons already included in the work, list each icons meaning, consider the manner in which the information will be documented

Research to make steps concrete
1. Reading and looking for relevant information
2.
3.

Things I need to do:
-send Thesis Statement
-consider viewer's response to images and is that relevant to what I am writing...should I poll various people to gather information concerning responses to imagery that I am using.
- Broader goal is to have Thesis pretty much finished by the end of November
-complete first work on paper so that I can see if it does what I want---I want it to be unavoidable

  1. Question? What do you mean by iconography?

  2. My personal iconography....images that hold personal meanings for me. Not everyone will understand my personal iconography but will be able to bring their own set of circumstances to the table that color the way they read into the meaning of images and connections between them.

  4. Ok, change in direction.....

I went into the studio and tried to work bigger on paper or canvas. I made really big screens and tried to even change up the color palette. In short, I hated it. What it did for me though was help me to understand why I choose some of the things that I do.
    1. I choose the color palette that I do because it conveys the emotion or mood that I am expressing in these pieces. I may try to use pops of color in future pieces and explore color a bit more in that direction but I am abandoning the idea of an all out color change. It doesn't work.
    2. I work on transparent materials because I like the way the light plays in between the panels when it runs through the pieces. It has an illuminating effect at times.
    3. I work on transparent layers because I can manipulate and keep them separate and dissect them if I want to. When this occurs they are also a metaphor for the layers of my own personal experience that I am dissecting to actually create the pieces. Metaphoric meaning goes a long way with me, even if no one else gets the metaphor.
    4. I work on small pieces because they are more intimate and I feel like I am embracing my work. With the big pieces I felt very detached and removed or separated from them.
    5. I like some of the effects that I can achieve with the mylar pieces that I cannot execute with paper, like painting it, sticking it to the wall and then peeling it off after it has dried for a while.

  5. Update on my progress....

    1. I have completed my CV, application letter and reference list. Because I am not certain as to what jobs I will apply for, I am not sure what else I will need.
    2. I have created multiple new images resulting in many new screens.
    3. Tried a piece with color--done with that. Addendum- will try a new piece with singular color added is limited areas.
    4. Don't need Warhol's colors now but I will be looking at the psychology of color.
    5. Have several books on artists that I believe will be helpful but I also need one on Basquiat.
    6. I am reflecting on relationships with people that do not always produce positive interactions. I want my viewers to see the sadness or the gloomy emotion that is spiked with other emotions like anger or maybe even regret. (One reason I also like the reflective transparent surface that I am working on is because viewers can see themselves in the piece and I want them to. Forgot to add this to the last post)
    7. I ordered paper and now don't need it so if anyone wants a roll, I have one for sale. I now need to order Mylar!
8, Started working on new pieces and would like to have two done by next week, Six total for the semester.
    9. I have decided to make a plexi-case for the book. No binding.
    10. Will continue my list of imagery and will add it to the book. I have a new piece in my head and will get images for that.
    11. Decided that a schedule on my wall is not the best plan for me as my schedule changes too often. I will be spending time in my studio on Mondays and Wednesdays and some Fridays. I love Fridays--no interruptions.

  6. OK, I have 10 pieces started, 2 complete, eight in the works. In light of the last critique I have begun to add different types of imagery into the work.
-I have also begun to incorporate small areas of color into each piece which I think is working well.
-I am working on using different types of marks to create different types of responses.
-I have turned in Chapter 1 of thesis and will turn in Chapter 2 in the next two weeks. It is my plan to have all of it in before Thanksgiving break.
    - Still thinking about my book and continuing to print single prints of the screens and their layouts.
-My schedule is of course, crazy as always but I am working with it as best I can.
    - I will apply for a job this week.
-New Goal- Submit work for at least three shows this month.
-Finish at least half of my works in the next two weeks.
-THis week- make sure I am up to date on all blog postings.

  7. -OK, I think I am up to date on blog postings.
-I have completed 6 pieces and have 2 in the works and have decided I don't like one of the others so it is a no go. I was trying to figure out where the other one went and I guess it must be the one I have put up in my studio that I don't really talk about so I am feeling good about the work. Will start one more before the semester is over and may or may not finish it but it will get started.
-I have had to give myself a new timeline on Thesis...will be finished before the end of December. I am actually ok with that because I am still ahead of the game if I get it down by then. I has taken me a bit of time to figure out where I am and what exactly I have been doing so I have to adjust the time frame now. But, progress has been made and I feel good about that.
-Continuing with color and have moved on to paper and a bit of a different direction that merges and works with what I have been doing so progress there as well.
Hmmm, I am going to think a bit more and will post again soon.
