Great Start John, But you are not telling it all. Here are some things that I would like you to add to your ISPO this week when you get back from drill:
ReplyDeleteYou discussed an interesting idea of the tree project with me (the one that you might work on with Derek.) go ahead write some on this in your ISPO- it might be a project that you complete or not but it is still interesting and something that you need to present on your ISPO.
Go ahead and research kinds of presentations- even if you are not sure of your end game here. Perhaps how other artists that you like are doing it. Post some jpegs of ideas on this.
Post your research bibliography for the book Water Margin and also post notes as you read.
" Is there meaning in forcing a cohesion or allowing it to flow? " What does that mean? Please explain
ReplyDeleteOK, critique for 2/29...
ReplyDeleteMake more stuff.
The idea may be ahead of the work or the work may be ahead of the idea but if you are't sure where you are, just make work and then go from there and then at least you have something.
-Try some smaller pieces to see how things work and to produce things and then if you like them you can make them bigger.
-I really think you should try the Prismacolor sticks. They could cover more ground faster.
Sometimes it is very freeing to just make the work and the more you make the more you want to make. It will be as if you can't make it fast enough to keep up with your thoughts. Sometimes you just have to make stuff to grease the gears of production and thought.
Yup, I know exactly how you feel. It is a very frustrating situation because your 30 hour review is coming up. You are supposed to have a lot of work and people are telling you to just make work. Well, if you just make work, your work is going to be all over the place. From what I have been told, what they are looking for in a 30 hour review is that you can make a cohesive body of work. You don't need to know all the details about it, but you need to have an idea of where you are going. You can change afterwards, just have something to show...a lot of it. I agree whole heartedly with Scottt's comment about how we are asked to just make work and sometimes the idea will come afterwards but at the same time we are asked to defend our work. How can you defend something if you don't have any idea?...It is very contradictory, but like Elsie said you have to just do it. I guess my biggest advice to you is to have one general idea, if you want to stick with the tree and the axe, and the arrows go ahead. Just make a lot more of it. If there is even one thing that all your pieces have in common you could defend it as a cohesive body of work even if they all look different.
ReplyDeleteYour 30 hour review is coming up so make a lot of smaller images. Also, very important, do NOT try to please everyone that comes and critiques your work. They are all right and they are all wrong, you will NEVER please them. So just go with what YOU think is good, taking the advices of what YOU think is good for your work.I'm sure you do that, but I just felt I needed to tell you that since that was what stabbed me in the back and I was not made aware of this until I was way over my head. Anyways, that is my advice to you. I hope I made sense =)
It is only the beginning. I think once you get started on pumping out work, you will find your direction. YOU NEED TO START!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, find other techniques and medium that will help you to produce faster.

ReplyDeleteJohn
I know your struggle, the first semester I was a lost as to describing what and where I wanted to go.
I would agree with those said dive in do more work.
You seem to have found a nutritive, a focus image.
Buy those prisma color pencils, buy more spray paint, just do the work, don’t think of what others may say right now, produce work, it will lead you, it will tell you.
Right now I don’t know what to say and I don’t know if you know where it will lead. So …..
Dive into to it, go for it!
I look forward to seeing where your work takes you.
