The Terrorist as Artist and Why War?

A nice article overall, if a little dated, and in light of the current political climate perhaps another example of 'whats worse than fiction?' I see a distinct parallel between these two writings, the Freud Einstein letters and the Times OpEd article. In both cases we see a discussion of one of the most basic of human questions which is 'what is evil?"- Whereas the Times article expresses this question directly by declaring the terrorist's motivations as confused ideologies expressing rage in lieu of justification as little more than evil, confusing and inexplicable, contagious and hypocritical, the Freud letter places interesting psychological boundaries on the conflict of conflict itself declaring war to be an inevitable, even at times necessary force of the basic human ethos guided simultaneously by the desire for Eros (love, survival of genes) and Destruction (protection from Other). Freud goes so far as to relate the Destructive gene to the actual achievement of consciousness itself, as if Mind is declaring I think therefore I am and I must protect the I. Hence, war and conflict. Unfortunately, Freud is more optimistic than the Times article in that the Times sees no end to the war scenario (Freud doesn't either but he sees a way out) and ends on a desultory note not unlike the conflict in the Batman movies wherein the Dark Night must transgress into chaos and evil in order to destroy the Joker, thus destroying that which he stands for as the scion of Justice and equanimity. Freud at least encourages Einstein to a more hoepful end (sort of) if only what he calls cultural evolution continues wherein the intellectual and the reasoned flourish beyond the uneducated and the primitive which he refers to as somewhat on par with farm animals. Freud's arrogance is nothing new, nor is his contempt for women, so maybe he isnt the best to testify on behalf of pacifism and human restraint, but I do agree with him unfortunately. Simply put, some people are just too stupid to be allowed to govern themselves unfettered. Kony and his ilk are one example, and there are numerous bloodlusting warlords from Africa to South Asia who are as bad if not worse, seeming to move in reverse of the evolution of industrialized mankind, and then we see people like Rick Santorum and Ron Paul and Ayn Rand and Mitt Romney and the Catholic Church and one wonders if human cultural evolution is more like a series of fits and starts and not an even progression of one event leading up a slope to another. Then again I have to interject Nietzsche here since he saw the ultimate end to the purely rational evolution of man which is that God is Dead and that man must now replace him and become the superman. And then we got Hitler. Yay. Any one else?

  1. The terrorist as artist and Dear Professor Freud.

Nothing new here, I really am amazed at how ignorant of history today’s so called reporters are, terror has always been used to do just that terrorize someone ,some town, some village, some nation.
The only thing that has changed is the media of communication, the cruelty of mankind has gone from heads on Pikes at the city gate to Video = no change.

We as a member of the Western Culture find such acts repulsive when the normal day in the non-Christian world find beheadings, death, starvation the norm.

I ask myself why should we the western world be spared from the acts of terrorists, we hide reality from our daily life.
How will hiding the ignorance and brutality of the third world, why would the so called free press hide such images.

The third world lives with this terror every day, we must learn now to also live with it, these radical nut jobs kill one of us with a .50 cent round out of a rifle and we kill one of them with a 500,000 dollar missile, its all nuts.

It is a religious war; the fires are fanned by the Imams supported by men who want no changes are more to the point those in power. No one in the west will say as much, political correctness reigns supreme.
This man refer to (his ignorance really shows here) that a popular protest eventual took us out of Vietnam, that is a lie, so many old tie dyed hippies think they ended that war, wrong, you can also note none of them will ever mention the millions who where murdered in Cambodia and Vietnam after the war along with millions who suffered in so called re-education camps, I have never seen a protest or a tear shed for these people, never!

    Dear Professor Freud.
Both Freud and Einstein suffer from a similar blindness as the press in their case it was the ability to focus on specific problems in their field of endeavor.
Both men shut themselves out of the real (political) world to such an extent that it literately put them in isolation.
Ignorant of global politics and the actions of powerful men leaves them naïve, almost child like.
I find it almost comical that someone would think to ask these two to step out of there tiny worlds onto a world stage to offer actual logical solutions to mans never-ending illness’ of just being man.

The League of Nations was a disaster as is the UN.
Both are based on the assumption that man is good, man wants peace and nations will work together for the common good of mankind.

History has proven that both have failed miserably!
The real world would eat these two up and spit them out.

Just as we must learn to live with radical terrorist we must also learn that politicians play with power, power that affects our lives, this game is a thousand years old; as long as we exist this game will be played out.

Has mankind evolved? Looking at our history man has invented, man has adapted to its environment, but man has something deep in us that has only taken a few steps out of the cave and can return to us in an instant to savagery.

So we attempt to live as civilized beasts in Western society while our adversaries in the third world live out their blood lust openly every day on video.

    Evolution ,I think not.

Other than physically leaving society we must play our part and focus on our love, our art, tell our truth as best we can, scream it, paint it.

  2. Interesting... I do not know much about politics, but I think that the people in Iraq have similar new than we do. We both use the same strategy... keep people scared to keep control. With one click, the TV will show us show us something one cruel thing here and one negative think there. I'm not just talking about the news, TV show, movies and whatever else there is. I remember the first time I visited the US and watched COPS for the first time... I was scared and locked all the doors and windows in the house. That was the first time a TV had scared me and actually made me worried about my safety.

  3. I'm not sure about anyone else, but when I read both articles, I responded more emotionally than expected. My disgust for war and propaganda corrosively bubbled up, becoming an unwelcome distraction. I immediately related the first article to our own media (news, shows, movies, magazines), and contemplated it's purpose in today's society (is their a political reason it has had such an obvious shift from news to entertainment, or has that shift become more obvious to me as I've matured?). I also remembered how 9/11, a horrific event, was used to move our country into a nation at war with terrorism, and to push our populous to W. Bush fever. As the second reading, the letters between Einstein and Freud, discussed the psychological impetus for war, I found the last section a little more enjoyable (it served as an antacid, calming down the negativity I began to surround myself with). Freud asked, "How long do we have to wait for others to become pacifists?" It is suggested that the fear of war will become the end-all of wars and that the cultural attitude developed through civilization will become an effective counter-measure against war.

Both articles address the importance of image or print in war. Image can become fuel. The reverse should be true as well, that image can undermine war.

    1. I, like Max, do not know much about politics myself. I honestly do not trust the media with what is going on in the world because it is all bias. I watch the news on the spanish channels and they focus on different parts of the world...more so than the news in English...and even then, I feel they are biased and somewhat controlled. In the end, it is all about holding power. As Drew says in his response, there is a savagery about us human beings that pushes us to do whatever it takes in order to get what we want (I rephrased it as I understood it). Some of us can hide it and control it a little better than most, but it is always there.
"Love thy neighbor as thy self" sounds easy enough :)

  4. Kristin- The Terrorist Artist and War
Unfortunately society's desire to be entertained has altered the way we see things. We are too desensitized to reality and everything is a show on TV, even when it isn't. If people wouldn't watch these videos or news stations wouldn't air them then they would not be ammunition, right? Terrorists would still be terrorists but it would be one less trick in their bag. When I look at our society and think about what is generally considered entertainment, I scratch my head. I in no way am equating these terrorist videos to entertainment, but I do believe that the things we see on television feed into the overall picture here. It reminds me of part of a movie I once saw. I don't remember the name of it but this crazy person was killing people by hooking up crazy contraptions to a computer and the more hits the live feed video got the worse the torture was to the victim. Eventually, once the website hits reached a certain number the victim was killed--on live feed to everyone who was watching on the internet...essentially because they watched, the person was killed.
I am in no way so delusional that I think if we stopped watching television, terrorists wouldn't be terrorists any longer, but if we didn't watch the videos, they would have no need to make them.

    1. Kristin I agree with you about TV and our desensitization of society as a whole. It gets harder and harder to stop this next generation from viewing this crap offered as entertainment. Controlling what the children watch is hard enough when they are young, but when they become of age, they have to choose for themselves and they do not usually make good choices at that age. It's really scary the direction society is headed. But this has probably been said before.

  5. Terrorist and Freud-

The tactical strategy set forth by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was freaking genius to say the least. Our current occupation of these insurgent strongholds are reliant on our abilities to repair the damage that these terrorist cells, our presence, and the reigning shadow governments have created in the past 30 years. The genius aspect is that al-Zarqawi is our opponent, with the people of Iraq in the middle. In 2003 we initiated a ground war and rolled over that damn country with a fury. For the next 8 years we held the foothold we had gained and tried to help the destabilized government and local populace rebuild. To do that, we had to defeat al-Zarqawi. The game he set up though, through his use of video recorded executions, resulted in us needing to play his game to win. As a Local National, would you choose the devil you know or the one you don't?

When it comes down to the fear of war becoming the counter-measure against war, I don't believe that that will ever happen. Humans are a social species and tend toward a pack mentality. Mammalian packs are territorial by nature and have fought for whatever they believe to be theirs for millenia. Some may fear war, but when the dust inevitably settles, they don't get to complain when they don't get the outcome they want.

  6. Janet Suarez –The Terrorist and War / Freud Article

Both the articles talked about war and terrorism which has been here as long as man. I believe the use of the image, specifically television and the internet is new as a vehicle in war and terrorism. Drew is right terror happens every day around the world and now they have brought the terror to our living rooms, but instead of scaring us or enraging us, I believe most people are just becoming desensitized. I agree with Kristin’s post, society’s desire to be entertained has altered the way we see things and especially our reaction to them. I find it difficult to find anything of value offered on television today. Most of these reality shows are just garbage and our young people just watch these shows non-stop. These reality shows are staged just as the terrorist stage the hostages. The video and images are staged for the greatest shock value and impact, just like our reality shows. Each new show, image, art, seems only to be concerned with how to top all the others. They make it more shocking, louder, bigger, and more grotesque. What happened to making it better, intellectually, culturally, to bring about change in a positive way for all of us? In America each generation has become less educated and cultured. Can images and television be used for good in society? Is culture and intellectualism still out there? Would anyone watch? I refuse to watch what I call trash TV. I choose life! I will read, paint, listen to music, and enjoy nature and people. And hopefully give back to society the best I have to offer.
