Anyway, its got some comments and images and asks for thoughts and so on and I came across this one by Leon Golub, whose painting I actually like if only for the naked honesty about what it is expressing which is the nature of power and people and war and awfulness and so on- I often wonder who would hang such a thing in their home, which I guess is a conversation for another day- anyhow, his comment referring to his own work is as follows -
“If I had to give a description of my work I would say it’s a definition of how power is demonstrated through the body and in human actions, and in our time, how power and stress and political and industrial powers are shown.“
Contemporary Art Since 1945-
“If I had to give a description of my work I would say it’s a definition of how power is demonstrated through the body and in human actions, and in our time, how power and stress and political and industrial powers are shown.“
By the way I have no idea where those highlighting boxes have come from but I think the writing is legible. Point is, I think thats a pretty awesome statement. Clear, concise, to the point, no flowery BS. I may have to borrow that implication.

ReplyDeleteThe struggle to describe ones work is near impossible with so much banging around in my head, does one follow ones strengths and expand from that point or do I blindly follow the images and dreams of a lifetime then apply what skills I have to bring them into focus?
Boiling it all down as Golub has done is great, its finding that path, that confidence to literally get to the bones of your work! that is kicking my ass.
I Would hang his work, and Gaya’s work, real images transformed, witnessing the unthinkable.
